What causes cavities?
A wide range of bacteria, both good and bad, are always present in your mouth. Unfortunately, the bad bacteria tend to cling to the enamel on your teeth. If you do not brush them away, they mix with saliva to form a sticky film known as plaque. Over time, plaque becomes a hardened substance known as tartar.
The acids in plaque and tartar bore small holes in the tooth enamel, allowing the bacteria to invade. This process continues, forming deeper and more destructive cavities, until you seek professional treatment. Eventually, untreated cavities can lead to painful abscesses and even tooth loss.
