Are electric toothbrushes worth the money?

Electric toothbrushes first hit the American market in the 1960s, but it wasn’t until recently that their advantages were fully understood. Although they cost more upfront than traditional manual brushes, electric toothbrushes also last longer. Other than occasionally changing the head, they need very little maintenance, and the body normally lasts for years.

A major advantage of an electric toothbrush is that eliminates much of the guesswork from brushing. Although proper brushing technique requires you to spend 30 seconds on each of the four quadrants of your mouth, people are notoriously bad at counting time. Better electric toothbrushes beep at 30 second intervals, letting you know that it is time to switch quadrants.

The other main advantage is that an electric toothbrush is easier to manipulate. Small kids and people with physical dexterity issues often find it difficult to properly position the brush and apply the right amount of pressure. Those who wear braces or have crooked teeth have difficulty getting into all of the nooks and crannies. Some people even apply too much pressure, weakening the tooth enamel. By allowing the electric toothbrush to do the work, these issues are no longer a factor. All you need to do is use the large, comfortable handle to place the brush in each quadrant, and it will automatically apply just the right amount of force for thorough oral cleaning.
