What Causes Gum Disease? – Family Dental Care of Bellevue
Gum disease, or the inflammation and infection of the soft tissues around the teeth, is caused by bacteria. These bacteria combine with food debris in the mouth to create a sticky whitish substance known as plaque. If it is not removed, plaque hardens into tartar, a difficult to remove material that can cause gum irritation.
As the tartar irritates the gums, it makes it easy for bacteria to invade beneath the gum line. Mild inflammation known as gingivitis can eventually give way to more serious periodontitis. At this point, the bacteria invade beneath the gums into the bones and tissues that support the teeth, causing bone loss. Left untreated, gum disease can cause tooth mobility and/or loss and affect overall health.
