Same-Day CEREC Crowns in Bellevue: One Visit, One Crown, Done

A CEREC crown is a porcelain dental crown that is designed, milled, and placed in a single appointment. Instead of two visits spaced a few weeks apart, we can prepare your tooth, scan it, design the crown on screen, mill it in our office, and bond it the same day — no temporary crown and no second visit.
At Family Dental Care of Bellevue, we use CEREC same-day crown technology so you can walk out with a permanent, custom-fit crown in one appointment. Below, we'll explain what CEREC is, how the process works, when it's a great fit, and why a same-day crown can mean less time in the chair and often less sensitivity afterward.
What Is a CEREC Crown?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It's a system that lets us design, mill, and place a custom porcelain crown in a single visit, right here in our office.
Instead of the goopy impression trays many people remember, we use our digital scanner to capture a precise 3D map of your tooth. The crown is designed on screen, milled from a solid block of porcelain, and bonded the same day — so there's no temporary crown and no second appointment.
Why We Use Same-Day Crowns
Convenience is the most obvious benefit: one appointment instead of two visits typically spaced two to three weeks apart. For busy patients, that alone can be a deciding factor.
There's also no temporary crown to deal with. Temporaries can crack, fall off, or feel awkward, and CEREC eliminates that step entirely. Because digital scanning and computer-aided design mill the crown to exact specifications, you also get a precise, comfortable fit.
The crown itself is made of tooth-colored porcelain that is strong and natural-looking, restoring the tooth to roughly 98% of its original strength. And overall you spend less time in the chair: one longer visit rather than two separate appointments, each with its own numbing, prep, and seating.
Why Is There Often Less Sensitivity With a Same-Day Crown?
One benefit patients don't always expect is comfort afterward. Because the permanent crown is bonded the same day, the prepared tooth isn't left exposed under a temporary for weeks.
Temporaries don't seal as well as a permanent crown, which can allow temperature sensitivity, bacterial microleakage, and discomfort between appointments. Sealing the tooth the same day reduces that risk significantly.
The Step-by-Step Workflow
Here's what a same-day crown visit actually looks like, start to finish.
First, the tooth is prepared — we remove any decay and shape the tooth for a crown. Next, we take a digital scan with our iTero scanner, so there are no impression trays.
Then Dr. Bauer designs the crown on screen, right there chairside, while you watch. The design is sent to our in-office milling unit, and the crown is milled from a solid block of porcelain in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Finally, the crown is tried in, adjusted, polished, and bonded into place. That's it — you leave with your permanent crown the same day.

When a Same-Day Crown Is a Great Fit
CEREC is an excellent option in many everyday situations. It works well for single crowns on back or front teeth, for replacing old or failing restorations, and after a root canal when a crown is needed to protect the tooth. It's also ideal any time a patient simply wants to avoid a temporary and a return visit. If a tooth has lost less structure, a more conservative option like an onlay may be all that's needed, and if even less is involved, you may only need a filling rather than a crown at all.
When We Might Recommend a Lab Crown Instead
Same-day crowns aren't the right answer for every case, and we'll always tell you when something else is a better choice. For complex cosmetic cases in the smile zone, where custom shade layering matters, a lab-fabricated crown can deliver a more nuanced result.
The same is true for full-mouth reconstruction or cases involving multiple adjacent crowns, and for situations where a material like zirconia may be the better choice for strength or aesthetics. Our goal is always the right restoration for your tooth, not a one-size-fits-all answer.
What Makes Our Bellevue Office Different
We do the entire process in-house — scan, design, mill, and seat — all in one visit with Dr. Bauer. He designs each crown chairside and can show you the design on screen before milling, so you're part of the process.
We never use goopy impressions at any point; we rely on the iTero scanner for all crown cases. That means you avoid the hassle and risk of a temporary crown, and same-day bonding seals the tooth immediately, lowering the chance of sensitivity and contamination compared to waiting weeks under a temporary. The same digital workflow also powers our 3D-printed restorations, another way we use modern technology to give you a better-fitting, faster result.
We invested in this technology because it makes the outcomes and experience better for our patients.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a CEREC crown appointment take?
Most same-day crown appointments take about two hours from start to finish. That includes preparing the tooth, scanning, designing and milling the crown, and bonding it in place — all in one visit, with no return appointment needed.
Are same-day crowns as strong as lab crowns?
For most single-crown situations, yes. CEREC porcelain crowns are strong and durable and restore a tooth to roughly 98% of its original strength. In certain complex cases, we may recommend a lab-fabricated crown in a material like zirconia for added strength or aesthetics.
Does getting a CEREC crown hurt?
Getting a CEREC crown should not hurt. We numb the tooth before preparing it, just as we would for any crown, and most patients are comfortable throughout. Because there's no temporary and the tooth is sealed the same day, many patients actually report less sensitivity afterward.
How long do CEREC crowns last?
With good home care and regular checkups, CEREC crowns can last many years — comparable to traditional lab crowns. How long yours lasts depends on your bite, oral hygiene, and where the crown is in your mouth.
Why is there less sensitivity with a same-day crown?
Because the permanent crown is bonded immediately, the tooth isn't left exposed under a temporary that can leak, shift, or allow bacteria and temperature changes to reach the prepared tooth.
