3D Printing at the Dentist: What We Actually Use It For

Our in-office 3D printer builds precise dental appliances layer by layer from a digital scan of your mouth — implant surgical guides, night guards, models, and temporary restorations, with printed permanent restorations arriving fast. For you, that means fewer visits, better-fitting appliances, and implant placement planned to a fraction of a millimeter.

Most people hear "3D printing at the dentist" and picture us printing teeth like a sci-fi movie. The reality is more practical — and honestly more useful.

What can a dental 3D printer actually make?

More than you'd guess. In our office, the printer regularly produces:

Surgical guides for dental implants — precision templates that control exactly where an implant goes. Custom night guards for people who clench and grind. Physical models of your teeth, built from a digital scan instead of a tray of impression goop. And crowns and bridges, so a tooth is never left unprotected while we work.

Each of those used to require either an outside lab and a two-week wait, or a messier, less precise process in-house. Now they're built down the hall, often the same day.

How does dental 3D printing work?

It starts with a scan, not an impression. A small camera wand (you may have met our iTero scanner) captures your teeth in fine digital detail in a few minutes.

From there, we design the appliance in software. When it's an implant case, we merge that scan with your 3D CBCT imaging — more on that in a second. The finished design goes to the printer, which builds the piece from dental-grade resin, curing one microscopically thin layer at a time with light. A wash and a final cure, and it's ready to fit.

How is 3D printing different from our CEREC mill?

Good question, since we use both — and they're opposites.

The CEREC mill is subtractive: it starts with a solid block of ceramic and carves away everything that isn't your crown. That's the strength champion, which is why it makes our permanent same-day crowns.

The printer is additive: it builds shapes from nothing, layer by layer. That's ideal for things a block of ceramic can't become — hollow surgical guides with metal sleeve channels, full-arch models, flexible-fit night guards.

Why do printed surgical guides matter for implants?

This is where 3D printing earns its keep.

When we place a dental implant, we plan it first in software — merging your CBCT scan (a 3D x-ray showing bone, nerves, and roots) with the digital scan of your teeth. We choose the implant's exact position, angle, and depth on screen, before anyone is numb.

Then we print a guide that fits over your teeth and directs the implant into precisely the position we planned. Not close to it — into it. That protects the roots of neighboring teeth, respects nerve positions, and sets the implant up for a restoration that fits the way it should.

That's conservative dentistry applied to surgery: maximum precision, minimum disruption to everything around the implant.

What about night guards and jaw pain?

If you clench or grind, a well-fitted night guard is usually step one — and "well-fitted" is the whole game. A printed guard comes from your digital scan, so it fits your teeth exactly, and because the file is saved, a replacement is a print job, not a whole new appointment cycle.

For patients whose jaw muscles need more help than a guard alone, we also offer Xeomin for TMJ and clenching. The two work well together: the guard protects your teeth, Xeomin calms the muscles.

Will your crown be 3D printed?

Here's the honest answer. Printable permanent crown materials exist, and they're improving every year — we watch this space closely. But milled ceramics like lithium disilicate and zirconia have decades of published durability data behind them. When something is going in your mouth for the next fifteen years, decades of evidence wins.

So today: most final crowns get milled, and the printer handles nearly everything around them — the models, the guides, the guards, the temporaries. When printed permanent restorations have the track record to earn a place in your mouth, we'll be ready. We adopt technology when the evidence is there, not before. Every tooth is its own case.

Quick answers

Is the printing resin safe?

Yes — we use dental-grade, biocompatible, FDA-cleared materials, and every printed piece is washed and light-cured before it goes anywhere near your mouth.

Does 3D printing cost me extra?

No. It's simply how we work.

How accurate is a printed surgical guide?

Implant positioning is planned and executed to fractions of a millimeter — a level of consistency freehand placement can't match.

Can you make me a same-day repair?

Often, yes. Printed temporaries protect a tooth immediately, and paired with our CEREC mill, many permanent crowns happen in a single visit.
